Mackenzie “Mac” Norris’ contributions to freight and passenger rail have earned him an induction into the CRHF under the Leaders category, which recognizes individuals who have had a considerable influence in the construction, development and promotion of the Canadian railway sector.
Norris’ career spanned 20 years with Canadian Pacific (CP) and another 20 years with Pacific Great Eastern (PGE)/British Columbia Railway (BC Rail), where he truly made his mark. He was head of the BC Rail Group of Companies from 1978 to 1990, a tenure that included a lead role in the PGE’s expansion into the north and a large-scale upgrade from branch line standards to a major mainline railway. Norris was also a major contributor to the success of Rocky Mountaineer, Canada’s premiere tourist rail service, as a member of the company’s board.
Described by his colleagues as patient, honest and a railroader who always demonstrated integrity, Norris displayed leadership throughout his long and successful career in rail.
